They are a significant part of the landscape and are used in a variety of ways.
Screening:Tall grasses in a large group can provide a screen to cover up an unsightly area. Pampas grass is an impressive variety for this purpose. Very large, tough clumps grow up to 12 feet tall depending on variety and soil moisture. Wide arching leaves with sharp edges spread in a fountain shape topped by dramatic 2 to 3 foot tall flower plumes on long stems in late summer and early fall. Pampas prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It spreads slowly by thick rhizomes to form a huge clump.
Late Season Color:Ornamental grasses also offer an impressive late season color when most perennials and annuals are faded out. Foliage provides additional interest with a range of fine to coarse texture, softly arching or firmly upright form and deep green, blue, red or purple, yellow and variegated leaf color. Many grasses have good fall color, changing to yellow, orange, red or purple before fading to tan or straw for winter. A native beauty is Muhly Grass that has delicate purple flowers in the Fall and can cover the entire plant in flowers.
Ground Cover: Low growing, mounding types of grasses are terrific for ground cover and to help control erosion. Look for dwarf Mondo grass which is excellent as an edging plant or tucked in between pavers. This grass grows to about 4 inches high and has dense dark leaves.
Containers: The various textures, colors and heights of ornamental grasses make them a perfect additon to container creations and make a statement simply by themselves. Consider Purple Fountain Grass for a dramatic bold presentation or Fiber Optic grass (though technically a sedge) for an unusual, funky look.
